Sprachbrüche is a multi-part series of events specifically aimed at young people with a migrant background, opening up spaces for them to engage with multilingualism through artistic, political and identity-forming means. Language is understood here as a central locus of belonging, resistance, appropriation and creative expression.
The project strengthens pluralistic European discourses, gives visibility to marginalised perspectives and encourages critical reflection on dominant narratives. In writing workshops, readings and panel discussions, participants work alongside European experts on literary texts, which are then presented at public evening events. This creates new forms of dialogue that sustainably integrate migrant and post-migrant voices into Vienna’s urban discourse, whilst bringing diverse European perspectives into the local context.
In the long term, ‘Sprachbrüche’ contributes to the establishment of multilingual literature in the public sphere. It combines migrant self-historiography, post-migrant culture of remembrance and local historical research with innovative forms of creative expression to promote pluralistic European discourses and marginalised voices.
